Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion

Your Medications Might Be Helping...But Are They Also Depleting?

Many prescription and over-the-counter medications do a great job treating symptoms and managing chronic conditions. But what most people don’t know is that certain medications can also deplete your body of essential nutrients over time, and that can lead to new health concerns if left unaddressed.

At our pharmacy, we’re here to help you feel your best by identifying those gaps and offering supplement support that restores balance.

What is Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion?

Some medications interfere with your body’s ability to absorb, store, or use key vitamins and minerals. Over time, this can lead to nutrient deficiencies that affect your:
  • Energy levels
  • Immune function
  • Mood and mental clarity
  • Bone strength
  • Heart health
  • Gut health
  • And more
You may not even realize your symptoms (like fatigue or brain fog) are linked to a nutrient your medication is depleting.

Common Medications That Can Cause Depletion

Many widely prescribed medications can interfere with the way your body absorbs, stores, or utilizes key nutrients. For example, statins (used for high cholesterol) are known to deplete CoQ10, which is essential for energy production and heart health. Metformin, a common diabetes medication, can lower levels of Vitamin B-12, potentially leading to fatigue or nerve issues over time. Proton pump inhibitors (acid reducers) may reduce your body’s absorption of magnesium, calcium, and B-12, while diuretics (often prescribed for high blood pressure) can flush out potassium, magnesium, and zinc.

Other examples include oral contraceptives, which can lower B-vitamins, zinc, and magnesium, and antidepressants, which may impact B-vitamin levels and CoQ10. Even antibiotics can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in your gut, making probiotic support important. While these medications serve critical health functions, it’s equally important to address the nutrient gaps they may cause.
